Grades K5–4: Optional Summer Work
For students entering Grades K5 through 4th grade, summer work is optional.
We encourage families to view these materials as a resource rather than a requirement. The provided activities are designed to help students keep their skills sharp, build confidence, and stay engaged in learning throughout the summer months.
Teachers have thoughtfully selected these materials to support a range of learners—whether your child would benefit from extra practice or simply enjoys continued learning.

5th Grade Academy: Required Summer Work
Students entering 5th grade are required to complete both a reading and a math assignment:
English Assignment
Students will select a novel from the
SCISA Battle of the Books list and create a poster presentation paired with a
short Book Talk to share with their class. This assignment builds skills in literary analysis, public speaking, and critical thinking while encouraging a love of reading.
Math AssignmentStudents will complete the
Daily Math Calendar, which includes one short problem per day throughout the summer.
This consistent practice helps reinforce foundational skills and ensures a smooth transition into 5th grade math.
Important Notes:
- All assignments are required and due during the first week of school
- Materials are linked above for easy access
- Hard copies of the Daily Math Calendar and additional books are available in the Upper School Front Office
